Adams initially wanted to be a singer and ballet dancer, but later on decided to drop the ballet in order to concentrate on dancing. She initially worked at dance theatres but later on decided to work in the movies and after struggling in the initial part of her career she struck gold with the Disney movie ‘Enchanted’ that put her on the way to become one of the most recognisable faces in Hollywood. However, prior to that she had made a name for herself as an accomplished television actor by starring in such series as ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ and ‘The West Wing’. Amy Adams has also been nominated for the Academy Award four times in her career which goes to show her prowess as an actor of rare quality The portfolio of work that Amy Adams boasts of in her two decade long career can put many actors to shame. ---------------------- Childhood & Early Life Amy Adams was born on August 20, 1974, to Richard Adams and Kathryn Adams, in Vicenza, Italy. Her father was employed with the US Army and was posted in Italy for some time and both her parents are Americans. Amy has six siblings, which include four brothers and two sisters. During her early childhood, her family moved around Italy a lot and it was only when she was eight-year-old that her family returned to America in 1982. The Adams family made their home in Castle Rock located in Colorado and Amy Adams took admission in the Douglas Country High School. Amy Adams was interested in choir music and ballet dancing from a young age and in fact she enrolled herself in a dance company when she was still a child. Initially, she had wanted to be an athlete but later on she realised that her talents lay in the performing arts. Her parents divorced when she was 11-year-old and after graduating from High School Amy Adams decided to live with her mother in Atlanta. She did not have any inclination to go to college and instead started to hone her skills in musical theatre. It was at this point that she dropped her interest in ballet since she thought she did not have the wherewithal to pursue it beyond a point. In order to take care of her expenses when she was enrolled at the musical theatre, Amy Adams worked for Gap as an in store employee and later on worked for Hooters. --------------------- Career Amy Adams started working as a dancer for several theatre companies in 1995 and got her big break in the industry when she moved to Minnesota in order to work for the Chanhassen Dinner Theatre. It was during this time that she decided to give Hollywood a shot. In 1999, Amy Adams decided to appear at the audition for the film ‘Drop Dead Gorgeous’ and was successful in getting the role. The film wasn’t a success and Adams relocated to Los Angeles, which proved to be a good move as she landed a role in the Fox TV series Manchester Prep. The show did not last long either. At the turn of the new millennium in 2000, Amy Adams started acting in several popular TV series like the highly rated ‘The West Wing’ and ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ among others. However, the big break came two years later when Steven Spielberg decided to cast her in a pivotal role in the Leonardo di Caprio starrer ‘Catch me if You Can’. In 2004, Adams bagged the role in the movie ‘Junebug’ and although the movie wasn’t a typical big budget Hollywood film; her role in the film was praised by the critics and she went on to win several awards. That opened the door for roles in films like ‘The Wedding Date’ (2005), ‘Standing Still’ (2005), ‘Talladega Nights’ (2006) and the commercially successful Disney film ‘Enchanted’ (2007). In 2007, Amy Adams acted alongside stalwarts of Hollywood like Tom Hanks and the Late Seymour Hoffman in the movie ‘Charlie Wilson’s War’ in an important role and the very next year she appeared as a female lead in the film ‘Sunshine Cleaning’. In 2008, Amy Adams was cast in the role of Sister James in the film ‘Doubt’ which also starred the likes of Seymour Hoffman and Meryl Streep.
